FED: Costello must answer allegations: Gillard =2

Opposition treasury spokesman Wayne Swan said there was now serious questions about
whether the Australian people could trust anything Peter Costello says.

"It's pretty clear that there are basic questions about the treasurer's character and
honesty at stake here," Mr Swan told reporters.

"And for someone who aspires to the highest job in the land it is his responsibility
to provide a full and frank explanation."

Mr Swan said the episode raised questions about whether Mr Costello was concerned more
with the national interest or his own interests.

"I think these revelations indicate that he is only concerned with his selfish political
interest," he said.

Mr Swan said the alleged comments showed the relationship between the treasurer and
the prime minister was "poisonous".
