Fed: Costello says WA gas plan unworkable

The federal Treasurer says a plan by Western Australia to lock up offshore energy resources
for use in Australia .. would be difficult to implement.

WA Premier ALLAN CARPENTER has proposed as much as 20 per cent of offshore gas reserves
be kept for use in Australia.

But PETER COSTELLO says gas is a world commodity and it'd be very hard to have a two-tiered
price structure.

He's told ABC Radio he supports getting energy to Australian households at reasonable
prices .. but companies are likely to resist any attempt to make them sell gas at below
what they can get on the global market.
