SA: Firetruck which withstands 1,000 degrees arrives in SA
A firefighting vehicle with a cabin that withstands temperatures of up to 1,000 degreescelsius has been delivered to Forestry South Australia.
The Fireking is the first of 15 such vehicles to come into service in South Australiabetween February next year and October 2005.
Forests Minister RORY MCEWEN says the $9.3 million fleet -- developed by Australiandefence technology company ADI Limited -- provides an unprecedented level of safety forfirefighters.
Tests by the CSIRO show the temperature inside the cabin rises by only 20 degrees celsiuswhen the temperature outside is 1,000 degrees.
ADI's managing director LUCIO DI BARTOLOMEO says the South Australian government'sdecision to purchase the vehicles has prompted international interest.
He says firefighting authorities from a major overseas market recently inspected theFireking at ADI's premises at Bendigo in Victoria.
