*WAS SHULTZ KEPT IN DARK?(Main)

Former National Security Adviser Robert C. McFarlane acknowledged Monday he was counting on Adm. John Poindexter, his successor, to inform Secretary of State George Shultz about his secret trip to Iran in May, raising the possibility that Shultz may never have known of the mission.

McFarlane, who last week said he told Shultz "repeatedly and often" about the top-secret operation, told this reporter that he was only keeping Shultz "regularly" informed about the covert arms dealings with Iran until he left the White House in December 1985.

If Poindexter, either inadvertently or on instructions from President Reagan, never informed Shultz about the full extent of the operation, it could mean that Reagan himself is responsible for keeping his secretary of state in the dark.
